Reporting in from SXSW, Joss Whedon has once again confirmed that neither Skrulls nor the Kree will be making any kind of appearance in Marvel’s The Avengers when it debuts in theaters this May. He offers a couple of reasons why they aren’t included. Mainly the fact that both alien races, so popular in the Marvel Universe, have far too much backstory to explore in a two hour film that has seven lead characters.

Here is Joss Whedon’s statement on the aliens we’ve glimpsed in the most recently released trailer and the Lego sets.

“It’s the Vulcans. I don’t know a lot about the Marvel universe, and I thought there were Vulcans. I know we’re going to get a lot of emails about that one…I will say only this: It is not the Kree or the Skrulls.

Those two aliens are Marvel mainstays and have enormous back stories. They have a big life of their own that just could not be contained in a film where I already had seven movie stars.

The Skrulls…They can shape change. That’s a whole thing. I’ve already got Loki. He’s got magic. Once you got magic along with your Iron Man and your Black Widow…It’s a real juggling act.”

It has long been speculated that Walt Disney Pictures does not own the rights to use The Kree nor Skrulls in this particular franchise, because those rights are with another studio. It is believed that the aliens in Marvel’s The Avengers are a generic alien race based off both the Kree and Skrull, changed just enough as to not cause any legal issues.

It has been rumored that either the Kree, a scientifically and technologically advanced militaristic alien race, or Skrulls, an alien race of shape shifters bent on taking over the Earth, will appear in the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot at 20th Century Fox.

We are just a few short months away from Marvel’s The Avengers kicking off the summer movie season in theaters May 4. Even though it hasn’t opened yet, it is almost a foregone conclusion that we will be seeing a sequel in the next few years, and director Joss Whedon already has a few ideas about what he would like to see in a follow-up.

This is what the filmmaker had to say when asked how a sequel could be any bigger than the first Marvel’s The Avengers.

“By not trying to. By being smaller. More personal, more painful. By being the next thing that should happen to these characters, and not just a rehash of what seemed to work the first time. By having a theme that is completely fresh and organic to itself. I want to know what makes them tick, what makes them flawed, what makes them fight – and ultimately, what makes them awesome. I go to these movies for those moments when the heroes define themselves, either through action or deliciously overwritten speeches.”

From the latest issue of SFX Magazine, How I Met Your Mother actress Cobie Smulders discussed her appearance as Agent Maria Hill in Marvel’s The Avengers flick. Essentially sharing her initial approach to the role, potential “female bonding” with Black Widow, and relationship with Nick Fury, read on below!

How was it working with Joss Whedon?
It was everything they said it would be. I’ve wanted to work with Joss for a long time now. I auditioned and then he saw the tape and I was brought in to screen test with him. I somehow convined him to give me the part.

Do you get to bond with Black Widow much?
There’s not a lot of female bonding because of the central story. I’d like to think behind the scenes they were really good pals like the guys in the locker room.

What was your approach to creating Maria Hill?
I said to Joss and Marvel,”How would you like this to be done and I will try to do that to the best of my abilities.’” I wanted to bring out the things in her personality in the comic books that I liked, which was similar to what they had envisioned.

What is Maria Hill’s relationship with Nick Fury?
Maria Hill has an interesting relationship with Nick at the beginning. She really follows the rules and has a certain mentality when it comes to the way that she gets things done. I don’t think she necessarily agrees with Fury so there’s a lot of head-butting throughout the film as that relationship changes.

What type of “change” do you think will occur between Maria Hill & Nick Fury’s relationship?
Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”–the super hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, & directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, Marvel’s The Avengers hits theatres on May 4, 2012. (Source)

The Avengers did it again! Within a 24 hour time period the latest and greatest Avengers trailer was viewed on iTunes 13.7 million times! This shatters the previous record which was The Avengers Super Bowl spot, which had over 10 million views. I’ve watched it about 27 times already myself, and I think I’ll go ahead and watch it again. While I’m at it, you might as well do the same thing. It can’t hurt by adding a little more awesomeness to your day.

Do you think The Avengers has the ability to beat Avatar at the box office becoming the highest grossing film ever made? Here’s the official press release:

Marvel Studios announced today that its new trailer for this summer’s most highly anticipated movie, “Marvel’s The Avengers,” has been viewed over 13.7 million times in the first 24 hours of its debut, setting a new record for the most viewed trailer on iTunes (www.apple.com/trailers) and the iTunes Trailers app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

The new trailer, unveiled Wednesday, February 29, exclusively on iTunes, gives fans an exciting look at “Marvel’s The Avengers”—an action adventure of a lifetime—based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since.
